About the Author

Vivien Bowers is from Nelson, BC

Vivien Bowers was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1951, the second of four children. Interspersed with breaks for travelling, she received a B.A. in English from the University of British Columbia followed by a teaching certificate, and was a grade 5 teacher for several years. She has been a freelance writer for more than twenty years, writing elementary and secondary school materials, as well as non-fiction books and magazine articles for both adults and children.

Her book Wow Canada! Exploring This Land From Coast to Coast to Coast received a number of prestigious awards, including the Red Cedar Book Award and the Sheila A. Egoff Children's Book Award. Following the popularity of the book, she wrote Only In Canada! From the Colossal to the Kooky, and That's Very Canadian! An Exceptionally Interesting Report About All Things Canadian, by Rachel, which was a Canadian Toy Testing Council "Top Ten Best Books". Vivien has also written a fascinating children's book on forensic science called Crime Science: How Investigators Use Science to Track Down the Bad Guys.

Vivien's articles for adults and children have appeared in National Geographic, Ranger Rick, Canadian Geographic, Equinox, and numerous other Canadian and U.S. publications.

She now lives outside of Nelson, B.C. with her husband and two teenaged sons, and escapes into the wilderness to ski, hike, or canoe whenever time permits.
