Tabasco, The Saucy Raccoon

Tabasco the raccoon, at three weeks of age, is orphaned and becomes the constant companion of Lyn. She takes Tabasco everywhere with her including planes, hotels, and research trips. Tabasco gets into all sorts of mischief but is loved by everyone who comes in contact with her.

Lyn Hancock has lived with raccoons, cougars, bears, apes, and people, but Tabasco has always had a special place in her heart. Lyn is an entertaining and passionate speaker on the topic that she most enjoys: touching the wild, and letting the wild touch you. Born in Australia, she has travelled extensively in and written about Canada's wild places, particularly the North. Her presentations, classroom visits, and books bring people and nature together and change lives.

Suggested Activities
- Borrow some books about raccoons from the library. Read up on the habits of wild raccoons. Explain how the habits of wild raccoons were the same or different from the habits of Tabasco the pet raccoon.
- There are those that believe no orphaned baby animal should be raised with people, and it is more humane to shoot the animal. Have a class discussion, a debate, or write an opinion paper either for or against this idea.

- Make a poster using the information in the book and in the Aftermath educating the public on what to do if they have a raccoon problem.
- Wild animals are such an important part of our human existence. Keeping this in mind, draw a picture, write a poem, or write a song and present it to the class.
