Owen, his sister, Holly, and his dad go out to Humboldt Lake the first day that the lake has frozen and it is good for hockey. They share the ice with ice fishermen and enjoy the play. When their puck mistakenly goes down one of the fishing holes, dad shows Owen and Holly how to make a puck by cutting a piece off a poplar tree. They then, put the pieces, in a net and drop them into a hole so the pucks freeze. Soon friends arrive and the game continues with the new puck.
