Fifteen-year-old Greta Kovachi travels with her brilliant father to a laboratory habitat in a submarine on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Her father has created the first man-made black hole to prove that all matter in the universe is made up of infinitesimal particles of time. Greta was looking forward to this adventure, but she gets more than she bargained for. What was supposed to be a trip of a few days turns into a nightmare when an accident with the black hole spins them billions of years into the future, trapping her dad along with the other scientists in a particle of time. Three other kids live on the habitat, and, calling themselves the Aquanauts, they band together with Greta to travel through layers of time in a frantic attempt to save their parents and themselves from being locked under the sea for eternity.

About the Author

John Lunn

John Lunn is from Newport, New Hampshire

Born in Toronto, Ontario in 1958, John is the youngest of five children of award winning children’s book author Janet Lunn and journalist Richard Lunn. His family moved to Prince Edward County (along the north shore of Lake Ontario) when he was ten. After high school, John moved back to Toronto and began an apprentice with flutemaker Jack Goosman for three years. After his apprenticeship, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts to work for a world renowned flute company.

He met his wife, Meredith in 1983 while living in Concord, Mass. They were married in 1987 and moved together to Toronto in 1988 and started a flute company of their own with an original flute design that received international acclaimed soon after. In 1991, the Lunns moved to Newport, New Hampshire, where they still live with their three dogs Tristan, Zoe and Spike.

John began writing poems and stories as a teenager. He completed a science fiction novel at age nineteen, but never pursued writing as a career. He always kept writing as an avocation in between making flutes, raising kids, flying airplanes, and working in local politics. The Mariner's Curse, John’s first published novel, is a fast-paced thriller about a young boy named Rory and the unlikely ghost he encounters on a voyage across the Atlantic.

John is currently visiting bookshops, schools, and libraries to promote The Mariner’s Curse, as well as marketing several screenplays, a nonfiction book on comic strip art, and a TV sitcom pilot. His next project is a science fiction trilogy for teens.

Suggested Activities

  1. Create a cluster of one aspect of the story. You may choose characters, problems, setting, emotions, hopes, or science. Put the cluster in the middle and put the supporting ideas out from the cluster.
  2. Paint a watercolour showing Greta caught in the future.
  3. Research current deep sea exploration. Create a short power point, remembering to credit your sources.
  4. Create a missing persons poster for Greta's father. Missing persons posters are posted in schools, stores and police departments. Be sure to include information regarding appearance, height, hair colour, clothing, age, distinguishing marks and last known location. Add illustrations and colour.
