Jake, a budding artist and the creator of a comic book superhero, “Jakeman” and his sister Shoshona, join other children on a bus trip to visit their mothers in a New York prison. The trip there is long, and the visit brief, and then the trip back spirals out of control.
Deborah Ellis is the internationally acclaimed author of more than twenty books for children. She gained acclaim when her first novel for young adults, Looking for X, won the Governor General's Award in 1999. She went on to write the multi-award winning Breadwinner trilogy. In 2003, Deborah traveled to Malawi and Tanzania, where she spent time with children orphaned by AIDS and found the inspiration for her next novel, The Heaven Shop. In 2005, she received the Vicky Metcalfe award for her body of work. Deborah says of the characters she creates, "We have created a world where most children live in some form of war, and I write about them to try and do honor to their strength and courage. The world's children are our blessing and our responsibility." Raised in Paris, Ontario, Deborah Ellis now lives in Simcoe, Ontario.
