When Sage Smiley’s “Uncle Dunkle” points his World War II Supermarine spitfire plane straight down, he’s glad he has a magic amber stone to wisk him away to any place he wants to go. Why then did he wish for Treasure Island, home of murderous pirates and man-eating sharks?
Author Darren Krill leads a double life! During the day, he works as the Manager of Corporate Communications for the Edmonton Oilers. In the evening, he's a young adult author. This proud native of Edmonton, Alberta makes a number of references to the city in his debut book, The Uncle Duncle Chronicles: Escape from Treasure Island. For example, when describing the town of Spruce Ridge, he mentions Sage's favourite haunts like "Ducey Diamond" which used to be the name of Edmonton's ballpark, "Hobbit's Book Emporium" which was a comic bookstore in downtown Edmonton, and "Bing's Grocery Store" which was the author's local grocery store (now called One Minute Foods). Just small salutes to his home town, where he lives with his wife Kelly. Darren spent his "time off" during the NHL lockout penning The Uncle Duncle Chronicles, and is currently working on a sequel.
