The varied sweep of southern Alberta has always been Hazel Hutchins' home — a prairie farm, a horse ranch in the foothills, the cityscape of Calgary and the mountain town of Canmore. They have together formed the backgrounds for over forty novels and picture books, supplemented by a few purely fantastical places along the way. Awards for her work include the R. Ross Annett Award for Children's Literature, Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, Shining Willow Young Readers Choice and Storytelling World Honour Award. Her three children are off leading lives of their own but they still show up in Canmore, and in her stories, from time to time.
