Nadia moves to Canada at the end of World War Two, after spending five years in a Displaced Persons’ camp. She has troubling memories about a Nazi family, but she sings Ukrainian lullabies.  She lives with Marusia and Ivan, but if they’re not her real parents, then who is Nadia really?

Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch has received numerous awards and honours for her picture books and young adult novels, including a nomination for the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year in 2007. Marsha penned the bestselling Dear Canada book, Prisoners in the Promised Land.

In 2008, Marsha was awarded the Order of Princess Olha by the Ukrainian President, in recognition of her story, Enough, which described the great Ukrainian famine that claimed millions of lives in the 1930s.

Surprisingly, up until the fourth grade, Marsha did not know how to read! She says that after she failed a provincial test, she taught herself how to read with Oliver Twist– a large novel that took her a year to complete. Ever since, Marsha read as many books as she could get her hands on, and had a new dream of becoming an author. After completing an English and Library Science degree, backpacking across Europe, and working for an industrial sales company, Marsha eventually focused on writing. After a hundred rejections, her first book was published in 1996.

This title is available in French, Enfant volêe.

I have finished the story, and it was amazing. You have described the book very well. I liked how Nadia was having the flashbacks, and nightmares. I also liked the ending when all her flashbacks started coming together, Marusia and Ivan were so understanding on what she went through! good work!

This was my favorite Willows book because she always chose the right words to describe the situation. And I hope Nadia finds her long lost sister.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely loved this book! So sad, yet tells the story of the 'lowly' children that took place in the setting during this tragic time. Nadia's flashbacks haunted me, but were so discripted it actually felt like I was Nadia! I'm Ukrainian, and I loved the parts were Nadia and Marucia would talk about Nadia's past! you are an amazing author! Not only do you deserve the Willow award, but perhaps a Newberry award as well! 6 stars!
